Hon. Justice Stephen Mubiru, on Tuesday 31, January 2023 opened a four-day training of 32 advocates organized by the Justice Advocacy - Uganda in partnership with Uganda Law Society at the Commercial Division of the High Court.
The training aims at exposing advocates to courtroom skills that support and strengthen their litigation and ethical practice. It will also equip them with the ability to persuasively present factual and legal aspects of their cases so as to facilitate the Courts to reach just decisions.
The Head of the Commercial Division appealed for their commitment toward the programme which will deal with challenges faced by young lawyers. Adding that the training will make them adept at preparing, organizing and presenting of their cases in court.
The Judge commended the facilitators for the consistent funding and support of such programmes.
HW Juliet Harty Hatanga, the Court's Deputy Registrar expressed her optimism in the training to improve the lawyers' skills in effective management of trials in Court and ultimately enhance the standard of proceedings.
Ms Linda Alinda -Ikanza, the CEO Justice Advocacy - Uganda urged the participants to strive for personal development so as to stand out in the legal profession through networking with senior colleagues, mentorship as well as rendering a hand to colleagues when in court where need arises.
During the training, participants will be instructed on case analysis, commentary witnesses’ preparation, exhibits, cross examination workshops, re-examination briefing, statement of the case, briefing and demonstration on submissions, among others.
The climax of each topical session will be climaxed with a moot court. The instructors of the advocacy training are accomplished American trial lawyers Mr Steve Fury and Prof John Sosteng from Justice Advocacy Africa, an organization that has since 2005 offered training to advocates in Kenya, Botswana, Malawi and Uganda.
